Roberto & Comunidad Café

Alto Huallaga · San Martín, Peru

Roberto's family has farmed the same hillside in San Martín for three generations. What started as a small plot his grandfather cleared from the cloud forest has grown into a cooperative of eleven families, all growing under the shade of native trees that have stood for over a century.

The altitude here — nearly 1,800 metres — slows the ripening of the cherries dramatically. What grows slow grows with complexity. Roberto picks each branch individually, returning to the same tree multiple times across a harvest to select only the cherries at their exact peak. Nothing is rushed. Nothing is mechanised.

After picking, the beans are washed in spring water from the mountain above, then laid out on raised drying beds where they sun-dry for up to four weeks. The result is a clean, sweet cup with a long, dark finish.

About this Coffee

Peru's high-altitude jungle regions produce some of the most nuanced coffees in the world — and almost none of it reaches the specialty market in the form it deserves. Most is blended, bulk-exported, and stripped of its story.

This coffee is different. It comes from a specific hillside, from specific families, in specific bags that trace back to the exact harvest. Tasting notes vary by season but consistently carry dark chocolate, dried fruit, and a clean, gentle acidity. It is excellent both as espresso and slow-poured as filter.

We roast to order with a partner roastery in Lima that shares our commitment to doing as little as possible to an already exceptional bean.
